About Ahmedabad

Founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmad Shah I, Ahmedabad grew from a walled riverside citadel into one of India’s great trading cities. Layer upon layer of history — Sultanate, Mughal, Maratha, British, and the freedom movement — gave it a depth that earned its old city a UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2017, the first for any Indian city.

The city sits on the flat plains of central Gujarat, split by the Sabarmati into a dense historic east bank and a planned, modern west bank. Its hot, dry climate once powered a vast cotton trade that made it the ‘Manchester of India’.

Culturally, Ahmedabad is a study in coexistence — Hindu, Jain and Muslim communities have shaped its food, festivals and architecture for generations. For travellers it offers the most complete introduction to Gujarat you can find in a single, walkable, endlessly photogenic destination.

Travel Tips

Practical advice for a smooth, rewarding visit.

1Do the official Heritage Walk early (~7:30 AM) — cooler, quieter and far more rewarding.
2Book the Calico Museum in advance — limited guided slots, no walk-ins.
3Gujarat is a dry state — alcohol is prohibited; plan an alcohol-free trip.
4Manek Chowk's street food only comes alive after 10 PM — go late and hungry.
5Dress modestly for temples and mosques; remove shoes before entering.
6Summers are extreme — sightsee before 11 AM and after 5 PM; carry water.
7Many sites close on Mondays (Kankaria, some museums) — check before you go.
8Use the metro & BRTS for longer hops; explore the old city on foot.
9Around Uttarayan, mind sharp kite strings (manja) on two-wheelers.
10Carry some cash for street food and bazaars, though UPI is widely accepted.
11Bargain politely at Law Garden & markets; malls and museums are fixed-price.
12Start day trips (Adalaj, Nal Sarovar, Lothal) early to beat heat and crowds.
