A forested mountain belt
The Balaram-Ambaji Wildlife Sanctuary covers a long, forested belt of the Aravalli hills between Balaram and Ambaji, and the road that winds through it is one of the most scenic drives in Banaskantha. Protecting dry deciduous forest, hills and rivers, the sanctuary shelters sloth bear, leopard, antelope, civet and a variety of birds.
The sloth bear is the animal to respect here: Banaskantha’s Aravalli belt holds one of Gujarat’s best populations, feeding on the forest’s termites, mahua and ber, and occasionally ambling across the road at dawn — thrilling from a car, dangerous on foot, so walkers stick to the shrine paths and daylight. Leopards, nilgai, four-horned antelope and a strong winter raptor list fill out the census, and the streams off the hills keep pockets green well after the rains.
Build the drive as a day: Balaram Palace — the Lohani Nawabs’ hunting lodge turned heritage hotel — makes the southern anchor with lunch on its terraces, the Balaram Mahadev temple adds the riverside pause, and Ambaji’s shrine closes the run north with Gabbar hill beyond. The Chitrasani and Jessore sloth-bear country extends the wild belt west for the committed. September to February is the season; drive slowly at the bends for the reason the signboards give.
The journey from Balaram Palace up to Ambaji passes through green, hilly country dotted with temples, the Balaram Mahadev shrine and viewpoints. In the monsoon and the cool months that follow, the hills turn lush and the drive becomes a delight.
