ABOUT THE PLACE

Swaminarayan's sandstone temple

The Gopinath temple at Gadhada (Gadhpur) is one of the most sacred shrines of the Swaminarayan faith — a graceful temple of carved sandstone, built in the early 19th century under the direct guidance of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, who lived at Gadhada for many years.

Gadhada holds a place of singular importance in the Swaminarayan tradition: it was the saint’s home for nearly three decades, the place where he delivered a great many of the spiritual discourses collected in the Vachanamrut, and where he installed the murti of Gopinathji (a form of Krishna) in this temple, consecrated in 1828. The temple’s warm sandstone, its carved columns and its serene shrine make it one of the loveliest of the early Swaminarayan temples.

For devotees, Gadhada and its Gopinath temple are deeply holy ground — a place of pilgrimage, of the living memory of the saint, and of the great festivals of the Swaminarayan calendar. For the visitor, it offers darshan at one of the holiest and most graceful of Gujarat’s Swaminarayan temples — best combined with the Ghela river ghats and the Akshar Deri nearby. (An active Swaminarayan temple; free entry; modest dress; busiest during festivals and Ekadashi.)
