About Botad
Botad is a small, deeply devout district in eastern Saurashtra, revered across Gujarat as a land of two great pilgrimages. At Salangpur stands the mighty Kashtabhanjan Dev — a Hanuman temple believed to banish all suffering, now crowned by one of the world’s tallest Hanuman statues and a vast, gleaming temple complex.
Just south lies Gadhada (Gadhpur), sacred as the town where Bhagwan Swaminarayan lived for nearly three decades — leaving the beautiful Gopinath temple and the holy Akshar Deri on the banks of the Ghela river. Beyond the temples roll the timeless villages of Saurashtra.
A third pilgrimage completes the district’s set: Paliyad’s Vihat dham, seat of the crocodile-riding goddess Khodiyar, whose towering flagpole is visible for kilometres across the plain. Salangpur, Gadhada and Paliyad can all be covered comfortably in a single day, and each maintains free community kitchens that feed every visitor who arrives.
Around the shrines lies the Bhal, the flat black-soil borderland famous for Bhaliya wheat, a rain-fed crop grown without irrigation and carrying its own geographical-indication status. Old market towns like Barwala and Ranpur see almost no visitors and offer the district’s ordinary working life. Botad sits about two hours from Ahmedabad and one from Bhavnagar; October to March is the season.
