ABOUT THE PLACE

An astonishing richness

While the Kumbhariya temples are remarkable as a whole, it is their marble carving that truly astonishes. Worked in the 11th–13th centuries by master craftsmen of the Maru-Gurjara tradition, the white marble of these Jain derasars has been carved into an almost unbelievable richness of detail: domed ceilings layered like blooming lotuses, pillars wrapped in figures and foliage, brackets of dancers and musicians, and friezes telling Jain stories.

Comparable to the celebrated Dilwara temples of Mount Abu nearby, this carving represents a high point of Indian temple art — all the more striking for being relatively little-known. A quiet masterpiece for lovers of craft. (Jain temples; modest dress; no leather; photography may be restricted.)
