ABOUT THE PLACE

A jewel of a temple, set apart

About two kilometres outside Dwarka stands one of the area’s architectural gems: the Rukmini Devi temple, dedicated to Rukmini, Krishna’s principal queen. Dating to around the 12th century, it is far more finely carved than its age-worn exterior first suggests, with bands of gods, celestial figures, elephants and dancers covering its walls.

What intrigues visitors most is its location. Why does the queen’s temple stand apart, away from Krishna’s own great temple in the town? Local legend answers with the tale of the sage Durvasa, whose curse is said to have separated the divine couple — a story lovingly retold at the shrine.

Quieter than the main temple yet richly atmospheric, the Rukmini Devi temple is a rewarding short detour for anyone drawn to art, legend and devotion.

ARCHITECTURE & SETTING

Solanki carving in miniature

Though modest in size, the Rukmini Devi temple is a fine example of western-Indian (Solanki-era) temple art. A shikhara rises over the sanctum, while the outer walls are worked in horizontal bands of sculpture — deities, apsaras, naratharas (human figures) and rows of elephants and horses — that reward close looking.

The interior, centred on the image of Rukmini, is intimate and atmospheric. Set apart on the road outside Dwarka, the temple’s quiet dignity and its legend give it a character all its own.
