— ABOUT THE DISTRICT

About Aravalli

Aravalli — carved from Sabarkantha and named for the ancient hill range — is a green, undulating district of north-east Gujarat centred on Modasa. Its crown jewel is Shamlaji, a revered Vishnu temple on the Meshvo river that draws an enormous Kartik Poonam fair each year.

Nearby, the ruins of Dev ni Mori once held a great Buddhist monastery and relics of the Buddha himself — among the oldest such remains in western India. Add the spreading Polo forests, the Meshvo reservoir and a deep tribal culture, and Aravalli rewards the curious.

— GOOD TO KNOW

Travel Tips

Make the most of your Aravalli trip.

1Avoid the fair crush — Kartik Poonam (Nov) draws huge crowds to Shamlaji — plan ahead.
2Don't miss Dev ni Mori — the ancient Buddhist site is a short hop from Shamlaji.
3Combine with Idar — Sabarkantha's hill fort pairs well with an Aravalli trip.
4Dress modestly — cover up at Shamlaji and other temples.
5Carry water — facilities at ruins and reservoirs are limited.
6Best in winter — Oct–Mar offers the most pleasant touring weather.
7Respect tribal culture — ask before photographing fair-goers; buy crafts directly.
8Day-trip from Ahmedabad — Shamlaji works as a long day-trip from the city.
