About Mehsana
Mehsana, in the heart of North Gujarat, is a district of ancient temples and quiet history. Its crown jewel is the 11th-century Modhera Sun Temple — a masterpiece of carved sandstone and a stepped tank that became India’s first round-the-clock solar-powered heritage site.
Nearby lie the hilltop Jain temples of Taranga, the Shakti shrine of Bahucharaji, and the timeless town of Vadnagar — with its soaring Kirti Toran arches, sacred lake and layers of Buddhist and Hindu past.
Add the birds of Thol Lake and the milk-rich Dudhsagar dairy heartland, and Mehsana offers a gentle, deeply traditional slice of Gujarat.
Mehsana holds two monuments of the first rank. The Modhera Sun Temple, built under the Solankis in the early eleventh century, is aligned so that the equinox sun reaches the sanctum, and its Surya Kund — a vast stepped tank descending in tiers set with 108 miniature shrines — is among the most photographed sights in Gujarat. The dance festival held there each January uses the temple itself as the backdrop.
Vadnagar, the district’s ancient town, adds excavated Buddhist remains, a pair of celebrated carved torans and a continuously inhabited history stretching back over two thousand years, while Taranga’s hilltop Jain temples and the Bahucharaji shrine complete the circuit. The district is also a dairy heartland, home to one of India’s largest milk unions. Ahmedabad is under two hours away; October to March is the comfortable season.
