Song, story and folk theatre
Two of Saurashtra’s best-loved folk arts belong to Surendranagar’s cultural world. The dayro is an evening gathering of folk song, bhajan and storytelling, where a singer holds a village audience with wit, verse and moral tales. Bhavai is the traditional Gujarati folk theatre — believed to have roots in this part of Gujarat — performed in the open with music, dance, sharp satire and a cast of well-loved stock characters.
The stage of the village
The dayro grew out of the village gathering — an evening where a singer, backed by a few musicians, holds an audience with bhajan, verse and story for hours at a stretch.
Bhavai developed as Gujarat's folk theatre, traditionally traced to Asaita Thakar in the fourteenth century, and performed in the open rather than in any built playhouse.
Both forms carry a sharp edge. Satire on caste, greed and hypocrisy sits alongside the devotional material, and the audience expects it.
Both are still performed, and a good dayro singer can fill a ground in Saurashtra as reliably as any other entertainment.
Why come
The dayro
A dayro runs on song and storytelling together, with the performer moving between bhajan, comic verse and moral tale as the night goes on.
Bhavai
Bhavai is played in the round on open ground, with no set and no stage — the audience makes the boundary.
Sharp satire
The comedy carries the argument. Bhavai's satire on caste and social convention is what gave it its long life.
Live music
The accompaniment is small and portable: bhungal, drum, harmonium and cymbals, enough to be carried village to village.
Stock roles
Bhavai works through stock characters and set episodes — veshas — that audiences know well enough to anticipate.
Night shows
Both are night arts, performed outdoors after the day's work, often running until well past midnight.

Watch a Bhavai vesha if you get the chance; the episodes are self-contained and the playing is broad enough to follow without the language.

Listen for the satire. The humour is usually aimed at power, and the crowd's reaction tells you when it lands.

The folk voice of Saurashtra
The dayro and Bhavai are theatre without a theatre — born in village squares and temple grounds, needing only a singer, a few musicians and a crowd. They carry the region’s humour, history and moral sense down the generations, blending devotion with entertainment and social comment.
