ABOUT

The night Surat eats by moonlight

Chandni Padva is Surat’s very own festival, held on the night after Sharad Purnima — the bright autumn full moon. On this one night the whole city comes out to eat Ghari, a rich, round, mawa-filled Surti sweet, paired with bhusu, a spicy savoury. Sweet shops stay open through the small hours, families spread out under the open sky, and everyone lingers in the cool moonlight. It is a celebration built entirely around food, friendship and the full moon.

The numbers behind the night are gleefully Surti: the city is estimated to eat over a hundred tonnes of ghari on Chandni Padva alone, and the famous houses — some tracing their recipes to the nineteenth century, when tradition credits the sweet’s popularisation to the freedom fighter era’s kitchens — take orders days ahead and still sell out. The classic is pistachio-mawa in a ghee-sealed round; kesar, badam and newer variations crowd the counters beside drums of bhusu, the sev-and-spice mix that keeps the sweetness honest.

Join it like a local: buy ghari in the evening from a queue worth its length, head for a rooftop, the Tapi riverfront or the city’s open grounds as the moon rises, and graze until the cool gets into the air. The festival falls the night after Sharad Purnima, usually in October; visitors in town that week should simply follow the crowds — Surat, a city that famously lives to eat, is at its most likeable under that moon.

CULTURE & TRADITIONS

A festival made of food and moon

Few cities have a festival so purely their own. Chandni Padva turns Surat’s love of good food into a public celebration: the mawa-rich Ghari, said to have been made in bulk for soldiers in the past, is now the star of a night when the entire city eats together. The balance of the sweet Ghari and the salty, spicy bhusu is the whole point, savoured slowly under a moon at its brightest.
