Where the salt law was broken
In the spring of 1930, Mahatma Gandhi set out from Sabarmati on a 240-mile march to the sea to defy the British salt tax. The route passed through the villages of Surat district before reaching the coast at Dandi, where on 6 April Gandhi bent down, picked up a lump of natural salt and broke the law — igniting the Civil Disobedience Movement across India. The district still keeps the memory of that walk, with memorials and the preserved coastal site marking one of the freedom struggle’s defining moments.
For today’s traveller the legacy makes a coherent day out of Surat or Navsari: the memorial and shore at Dandi, the Saifee Villa museum where Gandhi lodged the final night, and a slow return through the marked village halts. Early April brings anniversary commemorations along the whole route, and the walking-minded can join stretches of the annual re-enactment marches that keep the road’s memory in use.
The legacy is best read on the ground. The National Salt Satyagraha Memorial at Dandi sets the mood — Gandhi mid-stride under a soaring pylon, the seventy-eight marchers in bronze behind him — while the route’s village halts, several with their own small memorials, reward anyone driving the coastal stretch slowly. The act’s genius still lands there: salt, the most ordinary thing on the shore, chosen precisely because every Indian understood it.
