ABOUT

Gujarat's great festival of dance

Navratri — “nine nights” — is Gujarat’s signature festival, and Ahmedabad celebrates it with extraordinary energy. For nine nights in September or October, the city dances: in neighbourhood squares, housing societies, and vast organised grounds, thousands gather to perform garba and dandiya-raas in honour of the Mother Goddess. Dancers in dazzling traditional dress — chaniya choli and kediyu — move in great concentric circles around a central shrine or lamp (garbo), the steps building from a gentle sway to a fast, joyous whirl as the night deepens. Dandiya-raas adds the rhythmic clack of decorated sticks struck in pairs. Live singers and dhol drummers drive the energy, and the dancing often continues past midnight. Navratri is at once devotional and exuberant — a worship of the goddess Amba/Durga expressed through community, music and movement. In Ahmedabad it ranges from intimate traditional pol gatherings in the old city to huge ticketed events with famous singers. For the visitor, Navratri is a chance to join in Gujarat’s most joyful tradition — best experienced by dressing up, learning a few garba steps, and joining the circle. (Nine nights in Sep–Oct; gatherings citywide from pols to big grounds; dates follow the lunar calendar.)

HISTORY & SIGNIFICANCE

Worship through dance

Navratri garba. Wikimedia Commons.

Nine nights

Navratri means nine nights, and each is dedicated to a form of the Mother Goddess — the dancing is worship, not entertainment laid on beside it.

Garba

Garba is the circle dance, moving anticlockwise around a central lamp or shrine, and it is participatory: the ring simply grows as people join.

Dandiya-raas

Dandiya-raas is danced with paired sticks, in facing lines or circles, with the rhythm carried by the sticks striking as much as by the drum.

Today

It has become Gujarat's signature festival, and for nine nights the state runs on a different clock — dancing starts around ten and goes past three.

WHY EXPERIENCE IT

Why come

💃

Garba

Garba circles anticlockwise around a lamp or shrine, building speed through the night.

🥢

Dandiya

Raas is danced with a pair of sticks each, partners moving through set figures on the beat.

👗

Costume

Chaniya choli for women, kediyu for men — mirror-work and bandhani, and half the spectacle.

🪔

The garbo

The garbo, a perforated earthen lamp, stands at the centre and is what the circle is built around.

🥁

Dhol

The dhol sets everything; the dance follows the drummer rather than the other way round.

🌙

Nine nights

The tempo climbs steadily through the night — the last hour is nothing like the first.

THE CELEBRATION

How it's celebrated

01

Join the garba

Join the circle — garba is participatory by design and beginners are pulled in rather than tolerated.

02

Try dandiya-raas

Learn the basic raas step before you go; the paired-stick figures are easier than they look once you have the count.

03

Dress traditionally

Dress the part in chaniya choli or kediyu — it is expected, and it is most of the atmosphere.

04

Learn the steps

Watch the experienced dancers before joining; the good ones are very good and the figures repay study.

05

Visit a pol gathering

Old-city tradition.

06

Stay till midnight

When energy peaks.
