ABOUT

A holy seat of the Swaminarayan faith

Vadtal — sometimes called Vadtal Dham — is one of the two original seats established by Bhagwan Swaminarayan himself, and among the most revered temples of the tradition. Its historic shrine, laid out on a lotus plan, comes alive during festivals: Patotsav (the temple’s anniversary), Annakut after Diwali, and the great Swaminarayan celebrations, when kirtan, processions and elaborate offerings draw devotees in their thousands.

HISTORY & SIGNIFICANCE

Founded by Bhagwan Swaminarayan

Vadtal Dham, Kheda.
Swaminarayan

Bhagwan Swaminarayan established Vadtal as one of the two original gadis — seats — of the Sampraday, dividing the tradition's territory between Vadtal and Ahmedabad.

The temple

The shrine is laid out on a lotus plan, with the sanctums arranged around a central axis, and remains one of the tradition's most important buildings.

Festivals

Patotsav marks the temple's anniversary, and Annakut the day after Diwali brings the great food offering — the two peaks of its year.

Today

It is a working dham rather than a monument: an acharya lineage, resident sadhus, and a continuous cycle of worship and festival.

WHY EXPERIENCE IT

Why come

🛕

Holy seat

One of the two original seats Swaminarayan founded himself, which places Vadtal at the centre of the tradition.

🍲

Annakut

Annakut piles hundreds of dishes before the deities in a mountain of offered food, the day after Diwali.

🎉

Patotsav

Patotsav, the temple's own anniversary, brings processions, abhishek and very large congregations.

🎶

Kirtan

Kirtan runs continuously through the festival days, and devotional singing is central to how the Sampraday worships.

🪷

Lotus plan

The historic lotus-plan shrine is the architectural draw, and is unusual in its layout even within the tradition.

🚩

Processions

Festival decoration here is elaborate and the crowds substantial — this is one of the busiest temples in central Gujarat.

CULTURE & TRADITIONS

Devotion in festival form

The Swaminarayan tradition places great weight on utsav — festival — as a path of devotion, and Vadtal’s calendar is rich with them. Annakut sees a spectacular “mountain of food” arranged before the deities as thanksgiving; Patotsav marks the shrine’s consecration; and each occasion binds a vast community in song, service and celebration around one of its holiest temples.
