Dumas Beach Guide: Surat's Black Sand Shore

Dumas is Surat's beach, twenty kilometres south-west of the city on the Arabian Sea, and it is known for three things: dark grey-black sand, a very good line of evening food stalls, and a reputation for being haunted that has generated an enormous amount of internet content and very little verifiable substance.

It is worth being straightforward about what Dumas is and is not. It is not a swimming beach — the sand is mudflat-dark, the tidal range is large, currents are unpredictable and swimming is not advisable. Why go to Dumas

And for the sand itself, which is unusual. The dark grey-black colour comes from the sediment carried down by the Tapi and the region's geology rather than anything volcanic, and it gives the beach a distinctive, slightly stark look, especially against a bright sky or a low sun. How to do Dumas

1. Come in the late afternoonArrive an hour or two before sunset. The stalls are open, the light is good and the heat has dropped. Middays are hot, empty and pointless.
2. Eat at the stallsThis is the main event. Bhajiya, roasted corn, chaat, kulfi and tea, sold from a long line of vendors along the approach and the front.
3. Walk, don't swimTreat the water as scenery. The currents and tidal range make swimming genuinely unwise, and there is no lifeguarding to speak of.
4. Go on a weekday if you want spaceWeekends and holidays bring very large crowds from Surat, along with traffic and parking difficulty.
5. Try Suvali for something quieterA short distance away, similar dark sand, far fewer people. Better if you want a walk rather than a fairground.
6. Don't plan around the ghost storiesDumas's haunted reputation is internet folklore. It makes for a diverting read and adds nothing to the visit.

How to get there

Dumas is about 20 km from central Surat, roughly forty minutes by road depending on traffic, and Surat is very easy to reach — an airport with domestic connections, a major station on the Mumbai–Delhi railway line with frequent expresses, and about 270 km from Ahmedabad and 280 km from Mumbai.

City buses run to Dumas, and auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs make the trip readily; a cab is the simplest option for an evening visit, and arranging the return in advance saves a wait when the crowd leaves. Parking on the approach road fills up at weekends. The nearby Surat airport is in fact on this side of the city, which makes Dumas an easy last stop before a flight.

Where to stay

Stay in Surat. The city has a large stock of business and mid-range hotels, some good upper-end options, and the best food in Gujarat — which is the real reason to be here. Dumas is a forty-minute evening excursion, not somewhere to base yourself.

There are some hotels and resorts along the Dumas road and towards the coast, which suit visitors who want to be near the water or close to the airport, but they trade the city's food and character for proximity to a beach you should not swim at. If you want a genuine coastal night in south Gujarat, Tithal near Valsad, about 100 km south, is the better choice.

Best time to visit

November to February, in the late afternoon and evening. Surat's winter is comfortable, the sunsets are good and the stall culture is at its liveliest. This is also when a Dumas evening pairs best with the city's winter food specialities — ponk and undhiyu — earlier in the day.

March to June is hot and increasingly humid, and the beach is unpleasant before about five in the evening. The monsoon, June to September, brings heavy rain to Surat and rough, muddy, unappealing seas, and the city itself has a history of serious flooding in that period. Whatever the month, mid-morning to mid-afternoon at Dumas is a waste of a visit.
