Shivrajpur Beach Guide: Gujarat's Blue Flag Coast

Shivrajpur is the beach that changed expectations of the Gujarat coast. In 2020 it was among the first eight Indian beaches awarded Blue Flag certification — an international standard covering water quality, safety, services and environmental management — and the practical result is a stretch of coast where you can actually swim, shower and change, twelve kilometres north of Dwarka.

It is a managed, ticketed, developed beach rather than a hidden cove, and at weekends and holidays it is busy with domestic visitors. Approached on its own terms it is excellent: clean sand, clear shallow water, a marked and patrolled swimming zone, water sports in season, and the chance of a snorkelling trip over reef patches in the Gulf of Kachchh. Why Shivrajpur is different

Because the certification obliges someone to maintain it. Blue Flag status is reviewed and can be lost, which means sustained water testing, waste management, lifeguards, signage and facilities rather than a one-off clean-up. On the ground that translates into very little plastic, working toilets, changing rooms, freshwater showers, shaded seating, a boardwalk over the sand and a marked swimming area with lifeguards — a combination that is genuinely rare on this coastline.

And because the swimming is good. The beach shelves gently, the water is clear by west-coast standards, and the patrolled zone removes most of the anxiety that comes with unfamiliar currents. Offshore, this stretch of the Gulf of Kachchh holds coral and reef life, and operators run snorkelling trips out when conditions allow. On a calm winter morning it is an unexpectedly rewarding piece of coast, and it sits close enough to Dwarka that you can do morning darshan and be swimming by eleven.

How to plan a Shivrajpur visit

1. Come in the morningMornings are calmer, cooler and much less crowded than afternoons, and the water is at its clearest. Weekend afternoons are the busiest time by a wide margin.
2. Pay in at the entranceThere is a ticketed entry with parking, and charges for lockers, changing rooms and activities. Keep some cash for the smaller facilities.
3. Swim inside the marked zoneThe patrolled area is the point of the certification. Currents outside it are not managed and water sports operate separately from the swimming zone.
4. Use the facilities you paid forChanging rooms, showers and lockers are the practical advantage here over every other beach in the region. Bring a towel and a change of clothes.
5. Ask locally about snorkellingTrips over nearby reef patches run when the sea is calm and visibility allows. Ask about conditions and check the operator's equipment rather than booking blind.
6. Pair it with DwarkaMorning darshan at Dwarkadhish, midday at the beach, then the lighthouse or Nageshwar in the late afternoon. The two fit together neatly in a day.

How to get there

Shivrajpur is about 12 km north of Dwarka town, a fifteen to twenty minute drive, and auto-rickshaws and taxis run out from Dwarka regularly. Agreeing a return arrangement with your driver is sensible, as transport back can be thin outside peak hours.

Dwarka is the base and is well connected: a railway station on the Ahmedabad–Okha line with direct trains from Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Jamnagar, and road links along the Saurashtra coast. The nearest airports are Jamnagar, around 130 km away, and Porbandar to the south. If you are driving the coast, Shivrajpur sits between Dwarka and Okha, so it slots easily into a Bet Dwarka day.

Where to stay

Stay in Dwarka, which has by far the widest choice — pilgrim dharamshalas and guesthouses, a large stock of simple and mid-range hotels, and a smaller number of comfortable and sea-facing properties. It is only fifteen minutes away and gives you the temple, the food and the transport connections.

There is limited accommodation closer to the beach itself, including some resort-style options along the coast road, which suit visitors whose priority is the sand rather than the temple. Booking ahead matters around Janmashtami, Diwali and long weekends, when Dwarka fills up and Shivrajpur is where everybody goes to cool off. Outside those periods rooms are easy.

Best time to visit

October to March. Winter brings warm days, calm seas, comfortable evenings and the best conditions for both swimming and snorkelling, with November to February the pick. Mornings throughout that window are better than afternoons for water clarity, crowd levels and temperature.

April and May are hot and humid, though the sea is still usable early in the day. The monsoon, from late June to September, is the season to avoid: rough water, poor visibility, suspended water sports and closed swimming zones. Note too that the beach is at its most crowded during Gujarati school holidays and around major festival dates in Dwarka, when the temple town's visitors spill north.

• Go in the morning, ideally on a weekday, for the clearest water and the smallest crowd.
• Bring a towel and a change of clothes and use the changing rooms and showers — that is what you are paying for.
• Stay inside the marked, patrolled swimming zone; conditions outside it are not managed.
• Ask about sea conditions before committing to a snorkelling trip, and inspect the equipment.
• Arrange your return transport before your driver leaves, particularly outside peak hours.
