Gujarat has the longest coastline of any Indian state, roughly 1,600 kilometres of it, and yet almost nobody comes here for a beach holiday. That is the whole point. There are no rows of sunbeds, no jet-ski touts, no beach clubs pumping music into the dusk. What you get instead is space: wide tidal flats, camel carts on the sand, fishing boats hauled up at low tide, and sunsets that seem to last an hour because there is nothing on the horizon to block them.
The trade-off is that few of these beaches are truly built for swimming. Gujarat's coast is shaped by big tides, soft mud, strong currents and, in places, industry. Some beaches are gorgeous to walk and useless to swim; a couple are genuinely safe for a dip. Knowing which is which before you arrive saves disappointment. This guide sorts the main beaches by what they are actually good for, and strings them into a route you can drive.
Think of the coastline in three stretches. Kutch and the Gulf of Kutch in the northwest are wild and tidal, better for birdlife and marine parks than for lounging. Saurashtra, the big peninsula, holds the crowd-pleasers: Mandvi, Diu, Somnath's shore, Shivrajpur. Then South Gujarat, near Surat and Valsad, gives you the day-trip beaches like Tithal and Dumas, busy with local families on weekends. The water clarity, sand colour and safety change completely between these zones, so a single mental image of \"a Gujarat beach\" will mislead you. Treat each one on its own terms.

The grey-black sand at Dumas near Surat, one of the more unusual beaches on the Gujarat coast.
There is no coastal railway that hugs the shore, so a car is the honest answer for a beach loop. From Ahmedabad you can drive to the Saurashtra beaches in five to eight hours depending on which one. Bhuj is the base for Mandvi (about an hour by road or shared jeep). Dwarka is the base for Shivrajpur, only 12 kilometres away. Diu has an airport with limited flights, or you drive in from Somnath in around two hours. For South Gujarat, Surat and Valsad sit on the main railway line, and Dumas and Tithal are short taxi or auto-rickshaw rides from the stations. Ahmedpur-Mandvi and Chorwad sit further along the Saurashtra coast and reward those willing to drive the quieter roads.
For the best of the coast, base in Bhuj and day-trip to Mandvi, or stay right at Mandvi where there are beach camps and simple resorts. For the Dwarka-Shivrajpur combination, sleep in Dwarka and drive out early before the day crowds arrive. Diu has the widest choice of stays, from budget guesthouses in the old Portuguese quarter to beach hotels at Nagoa. In the south, Surat is a full city with every kind of hotel and makes an easy base for Dumas, while Valsad or the Tithal seafront work for that beach. Book ahead for weekends and any public holiday, when Gujarati families flood the day beaches.
Winter, roughly November to February, is the only sensible window. Days are warm rather than punishing, humidity drops, and the light is clean. March onward the heat builds fast and the coast turns sticky. The southwest monsoon from June to September brings rough, muddy seas and swimming is off the table almost everywhere, though the light after rain can be dramatic for photography. Aim for weekdays if you want the sand to yourself, since Gujarati beaches fill up on Sundays.
Which Gujarat beach is best for swimming?
Shivrajpur near Dwarka is the safest and cleanest, being the state's only Blue Flag beach with lifeguards and marked zones. Mandvi in Kutch and Nagoa in Diu are also reasonable for a supervised dip.
Why is Dumas beach sand black?
The dark grey to black colour comes from mineral-rich sediment carried down by the Tapi river and the surrounding geology. It is natural, and gives Dumas its distinctive moody look, though the beach is for walking rather than swimming.
Is Diu part of Gujarat?
No, Diu is a separate union territory, but it is surrounded by Gujarat and reached through it, so it is almost always visited as part of a Saurashtra coastal trip.
Can you drink alcohol on Gujarat beaches?
No. Gujarat is a dry state and alcohol is prohibited, so there are no beach bars. Diu, being a union territory, is the exception where alcohol is legally available.
Come to the Gujarat coast expecting emptiness rather than entertainment and you will not be let down. Walk Mandvi at golden hour, swim at Shivrajpur, watch the black tide roll in at Dumas, and you will understand why the locals guard these long, quiet shores so happily. This is beach travel at half speed, and it suits the coastline perfectly.
