A blue-stone town on the border
Dungarpur is a serene, little-visited town in the far south of Rajasthan, close to the Gujarat border, set beside a lake and known for palaces carved from the local grey-blue stone.
Its highlights are the lakeside Udai Bilas Palace and the wonderfully preserved Juna Mahal, a tall old fort-palace layered with murals, mirror-work and carving.
The district is also the gateway to Beneshwar Dham, the great tribal pilgrimage at the confluence of rivers whose annual fair draws vast numbers of Bhil devotees — making Dungarpur a meaningful, close-to-home trip for travellers from Gujarat.

Juna Mahal
Juna Mahal is the old fort-palace — seven storeys of tight rooms, staircases and passages, covered inside with murals, mirror-work and glass inlay.
Udai Bilas Palace
Udai Bilas is the newer palace on the lake shore, built in the local blue-grey pareva stone, and still partly a family home.
Beneshwar Dham
Beneshwar Dham, at the confluence of three rivers nearby, hosts the largest Bhil tribal gathering in this part of India.
Quiet & close
Dungarpur is barely across the border from Gujarat, which makes it one of the easiest Rajasthan trips from Ahmedabad.

See Juna Mahal
Go through Juna Mahal room by room; the murals and mirror-work are the finest thing in the district and mostly unrestored.

When to go
October to March is pleasant for the town, the lake and the palaces — the comfortable season across southern Rajasthan.
The Beneshwar Dham fair falls around Magh Purnima in January or February, and it transforms the district for several days.
April to June is very hot in this southern desert setting; start early and keep to the shade by midday.
