ABOUT

Bhavnagar's great community fair

The Gangaji no Melo (Gangaji Fair) is one of Bhavnagar’s most beloved annual fairs — a great community gathering, held traditionally around Kartik Purnima, that brings the city and the surrounding region together in festivity. Like the great melas of Saurashtra, the Gangaji fair blends devotion with the colour and bustle of a country fair: gatherings and worship, folk music and entertainment, giant wheels and rides, stalls of sweets, snacks and goods, and the joyful coming-together of families and villagers. For the people of Bhavnagar it is a much-awaited fixture of the year, a time of outing, celebration and meeting. Such fairs are an essential part of the social fabric of Saurashtra, marking the calendar with occasions of shared joy. The Gangaji Melo carries this spirit, filling Bhavnagar with festive energy. For the visitor, the Gangaji fair offers an authentic slice of Bhavnagar’s community life and Saurashtra’s fair culture — best enjoyed in the evening amid the lights and crowds. HISTORY & SIGNIFICANCE

A much-awaited city fair

Bhavnagar fair. Wikimedia Commons.

Kartik Purnima

The fair is held around Kartik Purnima, the full moon of Kartik in November — one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar and the traditional season for melas across Saurashtra.

A community fair

It draws Bhavnagar city and the surrounding villages together, with families travelling in for the days it runs.

Devotion + fun

The format is the Saurashtra mela in full: worship at the shrine, folk music and performance, fairground rides and long rows of stalls.

Today

It has become a fixture of the Bhavnagar year, the kind of event people measure the season by.

🪕

Folk

Folk music and performance run through the evenings, in the Saurashtra tradition of dayro and bhajan.
