As dusk falls over Gandhinagar, the Sat-Chit-Anand Water Show lights up Swaminarayan Akshardham — a 45-minute spectacle of water screens, lasers, fire and surround sound that retells an ancient Upanishadic story under the open sky.
A story told in water, light and fire
The Sat-Chit-Anand Water Show is the after-dark highlight of Swaminarayan Akshardham in Gandhinagar. Multi-coloured jets of water rise into luminous screens onto which lasers, projected light and leaping flames tell a story drawn from India’s ancient wisdom, wrapped in a booming surround-sound score. Held in an open-air amphitheatre beside the monument, it draws families and pilgrims who gather on tiered seating as the temple glows behind them.
Wisdom from the Kena Upanishad
The show tells the story of Nachiketa, a boy who questions the value of his father's sacrifice and is sent, in anger, to the house of death.
Yama, the lord of death, keeps him waiting three nights and then offers him three boons in recompense.
Nachiketa refuses wealth, long life and worldly power, and asks instead what happens to a person after death.
The answer Yama finally gives — the nature of the self as being, awareness and bliss — is what gives the show its name.

Images are projected onto rising walls of water, so the screen itself is made of the fountain.

Flame effects break out over the pool at the dramatic points, and you feel the heat from the seats.

How to experience it
Arrive before dusk
Tour the monument first, in daylight, and stay on for the show — the two are designed to be done in that order.
Book the show
Buy the water show ticket separately; monument entry does not include it and the counters close before the show.
Take your seat
Get to the amphitheatre early. It fills quickly at weekends and the middle rows are much the best seats.
Watch the tale
Read the Nachiketa story beforehand if you can; the show assumes some familiarity with it.
Mind the timing
There is normally one show an evening, after sunset, so build the day around that single slot.
Dine at Premvati
Eat at the vegetarian food court on the complex, which is good and saves leaving and coming back.
A monument to the spirit
Akshardham is a Swaminarayan monument in pink sandstone and marble, set in landscaped gardens. Photography, food and bags are restricted inside for security, so plan a relaxed visit — walk the exhibitions, see the central shrine, then settle in for the water show as the evening cools.

Timing
October to February is the best season — cool, clear evenings, and the amphitheatre is open-air.
March to June is hot by day but the show runs after sunset, when the temperature is bearable.
Rain can pause or cancel the performance during the monsoon, so check on the day before travelling out.

What is the Akshardham water show?
