About Aravalli
Aravalli — carved from Sabarkantha and named for the ancient hill range — is a green, undulating district of north-east Gujarat centred on Modasa. Its crown jewel is Shamlaji, a revered Vishnu temple on the Meshvo river that draws an enormous Kartik Poonam fair each year.
Nearby, the ruins of Dev ni Mori once held a great Buddhist monastery and relics of the Buddha himself — among the oldest such remains in western India. Add the spreading Polo forests, the Meshvo reservoir and a deep tribal culture, and Aravalli rewards the curious.
Modasa, the district headquarters, makes the practical base — a prosperous market town with Odhari Lake, colonial-era civic buildings, a lively bazaar and dhabas known for their thalis. From there the district’s attractions sit within an easy radius, and the Ahmedabad–Udaipur highway keeps everything well connected.
The wider circuit usually pairs Aravalli with its neighbours: Idar’s extraordinary boulder-strewn fort hill lies forty minutes west, the Polo forest ruins about an hour north over the Sabarkantha boundary, and Himatnagar sits between them as the region’s transport hub. September to February is the travelling season, greenest in the weeks immediately after the monsoon.
