ABOUT

The city that raised the Mahatma

Though born in Porbandar, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi spent his boyhood in Rajkot, where his father served as diwan. The family home, Kaba Gandhi no Delo, is now a Gandhi memorial and museum, its rooms lined with photographs and relics of his early years. Nearby he studied at the Alfred High School — later renamed Mohandas Gandhi Vidyalaya — which still stands. Together these places let visitors trace the formative years of the man who would lead India to freedom.

CULTURE & TRADITIONS

A boyhood that shaped a nation

Rajkot’s Gandhi sites are modest and deeply human — a courtyard house, a schoolroom, everyday objects — and that is their power. They show the ordinary childhood from which an extraordinary life grew. The city takes quiet pride in this legacy, keeping the memorial open to all who wish to understand where the Mahatma’s ideas of truth and simplicity first took root.
