ABOUT THE PLACE

The teak country of the district town

Vyara, the headquarters of Tapi district, sits in the heart of one of Gujarat’s richest forest regions — the teak forests of south Gujarat, which give the district much of its green, wooded character and its importance for forestry. The forests around Vyara are part of the broad belt of teak and mixed deciduous woodland that covers much of Tapi and the neighbouring Dang — forests that have long been valued for their teak timber and that support a rich biodiversity and the tribal communities who live within them.

The country is one of forest, field and the gentle hills of the Tapi basin, with the great Ukai reservoir and the Tapi river not far away. Vyara itself is a working district town — the administrative and market centre of a heavily tribal, heavily forested district — and serves as the natural base for exploring the wider Tapi forest country: the eco-campsites, the reservoir, the river, the forts and the tribal areas.

For the visitor, the Vyara forests and the surrounding country offer a sense of the green, wooded, tribal character of Tapi — best experienced as part of a wider exploration of the district, especially in the green months after the monsoon.
