Once a thriving port of the Kutchi seafarers, Mandvi still builds great wooden ships — dhows — by hand on its riverbank, using techniques handed down for centuries. Its long, breezy beach, the elegant Vijay Vilas palace set among gardens by the shore, and a relaxed old-town charm make Mandvi a favourite coastal escape and a gentle counterpoint to the desert Rann.
November to February gives the coast its calm seas and comfortable evenings; the monsoon closes the water sports and roughens the gulf, and summer’s heat is tempered here by the steady sea breeze that made the rulers choose this shore in the first place.
A Mandvi day assembles itself: the shipyards on the Rukmavati in the morning — hulls of Malabar teak taking shape exactly as their ancestors did — then Vijay Vilas and its private beach, the public sands for the late afternoon, and sunset with camels silhouetted against the gulf. Bhuj is an easy hour away, which makes the coast the natural exhale after the craft villages and palaces inland.

Mandvi’s identity is maritime: for centuries its sailors traded across the Arabian Sea to Africa and the Gulf, and its shipwrights built the vessels that carried them. That seafaring heritage lingers in the great timber dhows still under construction on the shore — a living link to an age of sail — and in a coastal culture quite distinct from the desert interior of Kutch.
