ABOUT

A global stage for music in Baroda

Every January, Vadodara comes alive with an international World Music Festival that gathers performers from across the globe alongside India’s own classical and folk musicians. The setting is fitting: Baroda has long been one of Gujarat’s great cultural capitals, with a musical heritage nurtured by the Gaekwad rulers and by the Faculty of Performing Arts at MS University. For a few evenings the city becomes a meeting point of sounds, from foreign ensembles to Indian ragas and rhythms.

HISTORY & SIGNIFICANCE

A city built on music

Baroda’s cultural heart.
The Gaekwads

Baroda's Gaekwad rulers were famed patrons of the arts, and of music above everything — Sayajirao III kept court musicians of national standing and endowed the institutions to train more.

Baroda gharana

That patronage built a school-tradition of serious music teaching which became the Faculty of Performing Arts at the Maharaja Sayajirao University, still among India's leading music schools.

The festival

The World Music Festival grew out of that inheritance, bringing international artists into a city that already knew how to listen.

Today

Held each January, it has become a fixture of Vadodara's cultural calendar and one of Gujarat's most distinctive events.

CULTURE & TRADITIONS

A city that lives for music

Vadodara’s reputation as a cultural capital is no accident. The Gaekwad rulers made music and the arts central to court life, and MS University’s Faculty of Performing Arts has trained musicians for generations. That legacy makes the city a natural host for a world music gathering, where visiting artists find audiences who listen deeply and a setting steeped in a living tradition of song and instrument.
