Crowning the volcanic height of Pavagadh stands the Kalika Mata temple, one of Gujarat’s most revered shrines of the goddess and a seat of pilgrimage since ancient times. Its great mela draws the faithful up the hill — many now riding the ropeway — reached along the Vadodara–Halol road. The crowds swell hugely during Navratri and again in Chaitra, when devotion to the goddess is at its height. Below the summit spread the ruins of Champaner, together a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
An ancient seat of the goddess
Pavagadh rises abruptly out of the plain — a volcanic hill whose height made it both fortress and holy place.
The Kalika Mata shrine at the summit is one of Gujarat's three great goddess seats, with Ambaji and Bahucharaji.
As a Shakti Peetha, the hill is counted a place of the goddess's power, and pilgrims have climbed it for centuries.
The melas gather at Navratri and Chaitra, when the pilgrimage runs at full strength.

A goddess shrine above the plains

Timing
Navratri, in September or October, is the peak fair — the hill at maximum devotion.
Chaitra, in March or April, brings the spring pilgrimage and the year's other great gathering.
Winter is the comfortable season for the climb itself, outside the fair crowds.
