ABOUT THE PLACE

A seat of the Mother Goddess

Ambaji is among the most important pilgrimage sites in Gujarat and one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India — the great seats of the Mother Goddess. Set in the Aravalli foothills near the Rajasthan border, the temple is unusual in that there is no idol in the sanctum: the goddess is worshipped in the form of the sacred Visa Yantra, a geometric inscription never photographed and seen only through ritual.

The white-marble temple, topped with golden spires, draws millions of devotees, especially during the great Bhadarvi Poonam fair when vast crowds walk to Ambaji on foot. With the original shrine on nearby Gabbar Hill, the Kumbhariya Jain temples close by and the festive bazaars around it, Ambaji is the spiritual heart of Banaskantha. (A major temple; modest dress; very crowded at festivals.)
