ABOUT THE PLACE

Faith in the old city

The Jama Masjid of Bharuch is a historic congregational mosque in the heart of the old city (ancient Broach), reflecting the long Islamic heritage of this ancient trading port. Like many of Gujarat’s old jama masjids, it is built partly in the regional Sultanate style, and, as at several sites, incorporates carved pillars and elements that speak to the layered history of the city.

Standing amid the bazaars and lanes of old Bharuch, near the fort and the riverfront, it is part of the rich, plural heritage of a city that has been a melting pot of cultures and faiths — Hindu, Jain, Muslim, Parsi and European — for over two thousand years.

A thread in Broach’s plural story. It remains a working mosque, so modest dress is welcome and worshippers should be respected. An illustrated emblem is shown here in place of a photograph.
