The Conflictorium — Museum of Conflict is one of Ahmedabad’s most original and thought-provoking spaces, a small independent museum set in a beautifully repurposed old building (the former Gool Lodge) in the Mirzapur area. Rather than displaying objects behind glass, it uses interactive installations, art, sound and personal stories to invite visitors to reflect on conflict in all its forms — social, political, personal and communal — and on the possibilities of dialogue, diversity and peace.
Exhibits range from a ‘moral compass’ to rooms of memory and creative responses to histories of conflict and harmony. Intimate, creative and often moving, the Conflictorium is a refreshing contemporary counterpoint to Ahmedabad’s ancient monuments — a place that engages the mind and heart, especially rewarding for those interested in art, society and ideas. (A small independent museum; entry is generally free.)
Inside the Conflictorium.
The Conflictorium’s spaces.
The museum occupies Gool Lodge, an old house in the Mirzapur area of Ahmedabad, repurposed rather than rebuilt.
It was conceived as a museum of conflict — an unusual premise, addressing social, communal, personal and political conflict directly.
Interactive installations, art, sound and recorded personal testimony replace the conventional glass case entirely.
It functions as a space for dialogue as much as display, hosting discussion, workshops and residencies alongside the exhibits.
Very few museums anywhere take conflict itself as their subject, and fewer do it in a residential house.
The exhibits are made to be handled, entered and responded to rather than observed at a distance.
Gool Lodge is a heritage house, and the domestic scale of the rooms shapes how the material lands.
The whole arrangement points towards reconciliation rather than simply cataloguing division.
Memory and conscience are the recurring themes, drawn from personal testimony rather than official record.
It sits in an old quarter of Ahmedabad, within reach of the city's much older monuments.

THE HOUSEGool Lodge, the heritage house the museum occupies.
Engage with the installations rather than walking past them; they are built to be used.
Look for the museum's signature pieces, which are what most visitors remember afterwards.
Listen to the recorded personal testimony, which carries the weight of the whole museum.
Give yourself time to sit with it. This is not a place to move through quickly.
Note the building itself — Gool Lodge is a heritage house and the setting is deliberate.
Set it against Ahmedabad's older monuments; the contrast in what a museum can be is the point.
Installations at the museum.
The Conflictorium occupies the former Gool Lodge, an atmospheric old Ahmedabad house, now filled with interactive installations, art and sound that explore conflict, memory and reconciliation. Its power is experiential rather than architectural — a small, creative, independent museum that invites participation and reflection. (Entry is generally free.)
