EXPERIENCE · ROPEWAY · PAVAGADHA cable car to the goddess — the Pavagadh ropeway, which lifts pilgrims and visitors up the steep hill towards the Kalika Mata temple with sweeping aerial views.
The Pavagadh ropeway is the popular cable car that carries pilgrims and visitors up the steep upper slopes of Pavagadh hill, towards the summit and the Kalika Mata temple. For those unable or unwilling to climb the many hundreds of stone steps, the ropeway offers a quick and thrilling ascent, gliding up over the forested hillside and the ruins, with sweeping views over Champaner, the plains and the layered ramparts of the hill.
The cable car covers the steepest upper stretch in a few minutes, leaving a shorter flight of steps to the summit shrine — a difference that puts the goddess within reach of elders and children. Queues run long on weekends, Navratri and Chaitra’s full moon; go early on a weekday, and buy return tickets unless you plan to walk one leg down through the ruins.
The ride itself earns the ticket: the cars swing out over the hill’s volcanic shoulder with the Champaner ruins mapping themselves below — mosques, tanks and walls in one aerial reading no ground-level visit gives. Photographers should sit facing downhill and shoot early, before the heat haze builds over the plain.
The ropeway runs from the Manchi plateau — reached by road or shuttle from the base — and lands a short stair below the Kalika Mata shrine, cutting the hardest hour of the climb to a few airborne minutes. Queues build sharply on weekends and festival days; aim for the first cars of the morning, and expect the service to pause in high wind. Round-trip tickets are the norm, though walking down the pilgrim steps past the gates and tanks turns the descent into the hill’s best sightseeing.
Combined with a short final climb (or palanquin) to the temple, it makes the great pilgrimage and the UNESCO hill accessible to all. The easy way to the summit. (A cable car; ticketed; subject to weather and queues.)
