NATURE · CORAL COASTIndia's first marine national park — a hidden world of coral, sponges, octopus and migratory birds along the Gulf of Kutch off the Okhamandal coast.
Along the Gulf of Kutch, off the Okhamandal coast of Devbhumi Dwarka, lies part of the Marine National Park — India’s first, a protected expanse of coral reefs, mangroves and intertidal flats that hides an astonishing wealth of life.
At low tide, the sea pulls back to reveal a secret ecosystem that guided reef walks let you explore on foot: living corals, vivid sponges, sea anemones, starfish, octopus, crabs and more, all in the shallow pools left behind. The surrounding mangroves and mudflats are just as rich, hosting flamingos, herons, plovers and a host of migratory birds.
Fragile, magical and little-known on this pilgrim coast, it is best explored with a guide and a forest permit, on a calm winter low tide. (The image shown here is an illustrated emblem.)

The Marine National Park isn’t a single site but a stretch of protected coast and islands in the Gulf of Kutch, made up of coral reefs, mangrove forests and vast intertidal mudflats. Its ‘architecture’ is entirely natural — and entirely tide-driven.
For a few hours around low tide, the retreating sea exposes the reef flats, and visitors can walk out (with a guide and permit) to see corals and sea creatures in the shallow pools, before the tide returns to seal the secret world away again. (Shown here as an illustrated emblem.)
