ABOUT THE PLACE

Terraced flowerbeds

The Step Garden is one of Saputara’s well-loved landscaped gardens — a series of stepped, terraced flowerbeds, lawns and walkways laid out on the slope near the lake. Bright with seasonal flowers and offering pleasant views over the water and hills, it is an easy, family-friendly place to stroll, sit and take photographs in the cool hill air.

Seasonal planting keeps the terraces changing: the beds run brightest from the late monsoon through winter, when Saputara’s air is coolest and the lake below holds the hills in reflection. Entry costs a token ticket, the paths suit all ages, and late afternoon gives both the best light and the town’s own strolling crowd.

The Step Garden earns its place in a Saputara day as the unhurried interlude: half an hour of terraced flowerbeds, frangipani shade and lake glimpses between the ropeway, the viewpoints and the boating. Families with small children and anyone pacing an older traveller will find it the town’s kindest ground — level paths on each terrace, benches in shade, and a small entry fee at the gate.

The monsoon and the weeks after it are the garden’s lush peak, winter its brightest bedding season. Pair it with the lake promenade below and the Rose and Lake gardens nearby — Saputara’s green spaces are best strung together as one slow circuit.

It is part of the cluster of gardens — with the Rose Garden, Lake Garden and others — that make Saputara green and pretty. A gentle, restful corner of the hill station.
