ABOUT THE PLACE

Carved stone devotion

The Swaminarayan Temple in Bharuch is one of the most elaborately carved and visually striking religious buildings in the city — a traditional stone temple dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan and built in the ornate style characteristic of the sect.

The Swaminarayan movement, founded in Gujarat in the 19th century, has produced some of the most beautiful temples in the state, and the Bharuch temple follows this tradition with its carved stone facade, shikhara tower and richly decorated interior.

The temple serves as a centre for worship and community for the local Swaminarayan devotees, and its serene courtyard and fine craftsmanship make it a rewarding stop in the city. A gem of carved Gujarat stone. (Open to all; modest dress.)
