ABOUT THE PLACE

Everyday coastal Saurashtra

Just east of Veraval and Somnath lies Sutrapada, a coastal town and taluka with a working fishing harbour and a long, quiet shoreline on the Arabian Sea. Less visited than the temple town nearby, Sutrapada is a place of fishing boats and jetties, sea breezes and a small old Surya (sun) temple that gives the area an ancient flavour.

The coast here, with its tidal flats and beaches, is part of the rich marine stretch of the Saurashtra shore and sees nesting sea turtles in season along parts of this coastline. For the traveller, Sutrapada offers a glimpse of everyday coastal Saurashtra life away from the pilgrim bustle of Somnath — a quiet detour of harbour, shore and sea. (A working coastal town; few tourist facilities. Illustrated emblem shown.)
