ABOUT THE PLACE

A golden shore by Diu

On the coast at the southern edge of Gujarat, where the mainland meets the island of Diu, lies Ahmadpur-Mandvi — one of the state’s longest and loveliest beaches. A broad ribbon of pale golden sand runs for kilometres along the Arabian Sea, fringed by casuarina and palm, with shallow, relatively calm waters that make it pleasant for a swim and a paddle.

It is among the few Gujarat beaches developed for watersports — visitors can try parasailing, jet-skiing, speedboat rides, and camel or horse rides along the sand. Lying just across the creek from Diu, it pairs naturally with a visit to the old Portuguese island, and its sunsets over the sea are spectacular.

Clean, spacious and breezy, Ahmadpur-Mandvi is the seaside escape of the Somnath–Diu coast.

HISTORY

The sandbar that links Gujarat to Diu

A golden coastline.

The coast

Ahmadpur-Mandvi runs along the mainland coast at the point where Gujarat meets the island of Diu, a Union Territory that was Portuguese until 1961.

Watersports

The beach was developed for watersports, with parasailing, jet-skis and boat rides operating through the season.

Diu link

Its position beside Diu means most visitors combine the two, crossing the short causeway to the old Portuguese town and fort.

Today

It has become one of the most popular seaside stops on the Saurashtra coast, without being overbuilt.

WHY VISIT

Reasons to make the time

🟡

Golden sands

The sand runs for kilometres in a broad unbroken sweep — one of the longest beaches in Gujarat.

🌊

Calm waters

The water is shallow and comparatively calm here, which makes this one of the few Gujarat beaches where swimming is realistic.

🏄

Watersports

Parasailing, jet-skis and banana-boat rides run from the beach through the season.

🏝️

Beside Diu

Diu is minutes away across the causeway, with its Portuguese fort, churches and old town.

🌅

Sunsets

The beach faces west, so the sunset runs the length of the sand and everyone stops for it.

🌴

Breezy & clean

Casuarina and palm back the shore, giving shade that most Gujarat beaches lack entirely.

THINGS TO DO

How to spend an hour or two

01

Walk the sands

Walk the length of the sand; few beaches in Gujarat give you kilometres of unbroken shore like this.

02

Swim & paddle

Swim if conditions allow — the water here is shallower and calmer than most of the Gujarat coast.

03

Try watersports

Try the watersports, which run from the beach through the dry season.

04

Ride the sand

Cross to Diu for the fort, the churches and the Portuguese street plan of the old town.

05

Cross to Diu

06

Catch the sunset

Sit under the casuarinas in the afternoon; the shade is a genuine luxury on this coast.

ARCHITECTURE & SETTING

Sand, casuarina and surf

Ahmadpur-Mandvi is a long natural beach: a wide belt of golden sand backed by casuarina groves and palms, sloping gently into the shallow Arabian Sea. Simple facilities and watersports operators line part of the shore, while much of it remains open and uncrowded.

Its appeal is pure coast — space, sea breeze, gentle water and big sunsets — and its position right beside Diu makes it the natural beach companion to the Somnath pilgrimage circuit.
