NATIONAL PARK · FOREST · WILDLIFEA pocket of deep forest in the south — a dense tract of moist deciduous woodland on the Purna river in eastern Navsari, rich in birdlife, butterflies and the green stillness of the Dang frontier.
Vansda National Park is a small but ecologically rich protected forest in the east of Navsari district, on the banks of the Purna river and on the frontier of the forested Dang country — a dense tract of moist deciduous and bamboo forest that preserves some of the last old-growth woodland of south Gujarat.
The park is renowned among naturalists for its biodiversity, particularly its birdlife and butterflies. The dense canopy, the bamboo brakes, the forest streams and the undergrowth support a remarkable variety of species — woodland birds, raptors, owls and a great diversity of butterflies, alongside mammals such as leopards (rarely seen), civets and the smaller forest fauna. The forest is also home to varied flora, including giant bamboo and a rich understorey.
Unlike the open landscapes of much of Gujarat, Vansda offers the experience of true forest — the green light beneath the canopy, the sounds of the woodland, and the sense of stepping into a dense, living ecosystem. It is best explored on foot or by slow drive, with a guide, ideally in the early morning when the forest is most alive. For the nature lover, Vansda is one of the green jewels of south Gujarat.
