ABOUT

The great full-moon fair of Ambaji

Bhadarvi Poonam — the full-moon day of the month of Bhadarva (August–September) — is the occasion of one of the largest religious fairs in India, held at the Ambaji Shakti Peeth in Banaskantha. Ambaji is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths, among the holiest shrines of the Mother Goddess, and on Bhadarvi Poonam it draws an astonishing gathering — many millions of devotees over the days of the fair. A remarkable feature is the padyatra: vast numbers of pilgrims walk to Ambaji on foot, many for days, along roads lined with free service-camps (seva), carrying flags and chanting “Bol Mari Ambe, Jai Jai Ambe.” The hilltop shrine of Gabbar, associated with the goddess, blazes with light, and the whole region pulses with devotion. The scale is staggering — the roads, the camps, the temple, the human tide of faith — making it one of the great spiritual spectacles of western India. The fair blends profound devotion with the communal energy of an enormous gathering. For the visitor, Bhadarvi Poonam at Ambaji is an overwhelming experience of mass devotion — best approached with reverence and patience amid the immense crowds. (A major fair on Bhadarva full moon at the Ambaji Shakti Peeth; millions of pilgrims, many on foot; immense crowds.)

The scale is difficult to convey until you see it. In the days before the full moon the roads into Banaskantha fill with sanghs of walking pilgrims, many covering a hundred kilometres or more on foot from Ahmedabad, Mehsana and further, carrying flags and travelling through the night while volunteer camps along the route hand out water, food and foot treatment. The district administration and the temple trust between them run a temporary city of shelters, kitchens, medical posts and queue corridors.

For visitors who are not making the pilgrimage, the fair days are best treated as an event to witness rather than a convenient time to see the temple. Darshan queues run for hours, accommodation across the district books out well in advance, and roads around Ambaji are closed to ordinary traffic. Gabbar hill’s ropeway operates through the period but at capacity. Coming a fortnight either side gives the shrine and its setting in relative quiet.
