ABOUT

A hilltop shrine of Shakti

The Kalika Mata temple crowns the summit of Pavagadh, a volcanic hill rising steeply above the Champaner plain. One of Gujarat’s most revered Shakti shrines, it draws a ceaseless stream of pilgrims to the goddess Mahakali. The devout climb the hundreds of stone steps that wind up the slope, while a modern ropeway carries others to the top. During Navratri the yatra swells into a tide of pilgrims chanting their way to the summit.

The yatra tests the willing: many pilgrims climb the full stair through the night to reach the summit at dawn, while the ropeway from Machi carries those who prefer it. Navratri and Chaitra’s full moon bring the greatest crowds; go on an ordinary weekday and the same climb becomes a quiet walk through Champaner’s ruined gates.

The Kalika yatra is Panchmahal’s defining pilgrimage: the climb from Champaner’s base through the fort gates to the goddess’s summit shrine, made on foot by the devout — many barefoot, some with coconuts and chundadis for vows — and swollen to a human river at Navratri and Chaitri Purnima, when lakhs make the ascent. The gold-spired temple at the top, renewed in 2022, receives them as it has for centuries.

Join it respectfully: climb early, give way to the barefoot pilgrims setting the pace, and take the ropeway down if legs protest — the yatra’s merit lies in the going up.

CULTURE & TRADITIONS

A pilgrimage of the hills

Pavagadh is counted among the Shakti Peeths, the network of shrines that mark the goddess across the subcontinent, which gives the climb its deep pull. Pilgrims arrive from across Gujarat and beyond, many walking the steps barefoot as an act of devotion. The shrine sits within the same historic landscape as Champaner’s ruins, so faith and heritage share the one dramatic hill.
