Gujarat has one famous hill station, Saputara, with a lake, a ropeway, boating, a strip of hotels and a great many weekend visitors. It also has Don, in the same district, at a slightly higher elevation, with a village, a few homestays, some viewpoints, forest paths and essentially nothing else. Don is what Saputara was several decades ago, and for a certain kind of traveller that makes it much the better destination.

The hill sits in the Dangs, the small forested district in Gujarat's far south-east where the Western Ghats enter the state, and it carries a set of local legends connecting it to Hanuman and the Ramayana. Development has been deliberately modest, with the state promoting it as an eco-tourism and community-tourism destination rather than building a resort strip. This guide covers when to come, what there is to do, and how to arrange a visit that depends largely on local hosts.

Why choose Don over Saputara

For the quiet, and for the landscape without the apparatus. Don is higher than Saputara — generally quoted at around a thousand metres — and the surrounding country is forest, ridge and valley with very little built on it. There are sunrise and sunset viewpoints, walks and treks through teak and bamboo forest, streams and small waterfalls in the rains, and long views over the Dangs. What there is not is boating, a ropeway, a bazaar or an evening crowd.

And for the community tourism, which here is not a marketing phrase. Accommodation at Don is largely homestays and simple eco-camps run by local Adivasi families, with home cooking and hosts who can guide you on the forest paths. That arrangement is the reason to come: you get the hill, the food and the walks, and the money stays in the village. It also means the experience is variable in comfort and entirely dependent on booking properly in advance.

How to plan a Don visit

  1. Come in the monsoon or the cool monthsAugust to October gives you green forest, running streams and small waterfalls. November to February gives clear air, cold mornings and the best long views. Both work; March to June does not.
  2. Book a homestay well in advanceAccommodation is a handful of family-run homestays and eco-camps. There is no walk-up option worth relying on, particularly at weekends in season.
  3. Arrange guided walks with your hostsThe forest paths are not signposted and the trekking is much better with someone who knows the ground. Agree routes and timings when you book.
  4. Get up for sunriseThe viewpoints are the main formal attraction and dawn from the ridge is the best of them. Cold in winter — bring a layer.
  5. Ask about the Hanuman legendsLocal tradition ties the hill to the Ramayana and to Hanuman, and your hosts will tell it better than any signboard.
  6. Combine with Girmal and SaputaraGirmal falls and Saputara are both within reach, so a three-day Dangs trip can take in the waterfall, the hill station and the quiet hill.

How to get there

The Dangs is reached from south Gujarat. Surat, with an airport and a main-line railway station, is the nearest city; Bilimora, Navsari and Valsad are useful railheads on the Mumbai–Delhi line, and Waghai is the terminus of the narrow-gauge branch from Bilimora. Ahwa is the district headquarters and the local hub, with Saputara about 30 km away.

From Ahwa or Saputara, Don is reached on minor hill roads and you need your own vehicle or a transfer arranged by your homestay — there is no useful bus service to the village. Confirm the arrangement when you book; hosts routinely organise pick-ups from Ahwa or Waghai. Monsoon driving needs care on these roads, and the interior routes should not be attempted after dark in the rains.

Where to stay

At Don, accommodation means homestays and simple eco-camps run by local families, plus occasional forest department options. Expect basic rooms or tents, shared or simple bathrooms, home-cooked Dangi food and genuine hospitality rather than hotel service. It is inexpensive, and booking directly or through the state's eco-tourism arrangements is the way in.

If you want comfort, stay at Saputara — a Gujarat Tourism hotel plus a wide range of private hotels and resorts, about 30 km away — and visit Don as a day trip. That works for the viewpoints but misses the sunrise and the evening, which are the best parts. Ahwa has basic hotels and is the practical fallback. Book everything well ahead for monsoon weekends and the winter holidays.

Best time to visit

Two good windows. August to October, when the monsoon has made the Dangs green, the streams and small falls are running and the forest is at its most dramatic — this is also when Girmal and Gira falls are worth seeing, so it is the best time for a combined trip. And November to February, when the air is clear, the long views from the ridge are at their best, mornings are genuinely cold and walking is most comfortable.

March to June is hot and dry, the forest is brown, the streams have gone and there is little reason to make the journey. Note that monsoon weekends bring substantial visitor numbers to the Dangs generally, mostly to Saputara, and that Don's tiny stock of beds can be taken well in advance. Around Holi, the Dang Darbar festival draws large regional crowds to Ahwa, which is worth planning around either way.

Practical tips

  • Book a homestay well ahead and arrange a transfer from Ahwa or Waghai at the same time.
  • Set expectations for basic accommodation and home cooking — that is the product, and it is a good one.
  • Walk with your hosts rather than alone; the forest paths are unsignposted.
  • Bring warm layers for winter mornings and rain protection plus grippy shoes in the monsoon.
  • Combine Don with Girmal falls and Saputara for a three-day Dangs trip.

Don is the version of Saputara that has not happened yet: a thousand-metre ridge in the Dangs with forest paths, sunrise viewpoints, Ramayana legends and a handful of family homestays, and no ropeway, boating lake or hotel strip. Book a homestay months ahead, arrange a transfer and a guided walk with your hosts, come in September or in the cold clear weeks of winter, and get up for the dawn.
