ABOUT THE PLACE

A holy island in the Narmada

Omkareshwar is a revered pilgrimage town in Madhya Pradesh, set around a sacred island in the Narmada river said to be shaped like the sacred syllable Om.

Pilgrim custom holds that a Narmada parikrama — the great river circumambulation walked over months — begins and ends at Omkareshwar, which stations the little town in the river’s whole sacred geography. The dam upstream has calmed the flow at the ghats; the old fishermen now row pilgrims where their fathers rowed nets, and the same boats serve photographers waiting for the island’s evening lamps.

Carry small change for the boats and offerings, keep to the marked parikrama path where the river runs close, and give the monkey gangs on the bridge nothing they can snatch — advice every returning pilgrim passes on with feeling.

The island holds the Omkareshwar temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva, while the linked Mamleshwar shrine on the bank completes the sacred pairing.

With its ghats, river crossings and hillside temples, Omkareshwar naturally completes the Mahakal circuit with Ujjain, and sits within easy reach of Indore and Maheshwar for pilgrims from Gujarat.

The island’s geography is the theology made visible: the Narmada splits around a hill whose outline devotees read as the syllable Om, the Jyotirlinga temple stacks its five storeys on the slope, and the parikrama path — a two-to-three-hour circuit — threads ruined fortress gates, the Gaudi Somnath’s colossal old linga and viewpoints over the confluence where the Kaveri channel rejoins the mother river. The suspension bridge and boats stitch island to bank, and the ghats below run the Narmada’s full ritual day from sunrise bathing to the floated lamps of evening.

From Gujarat the town slots into the Malwa pilgrimage loop: Indore is 80 kilometres away with the nearest airport and railhead, Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar pairs for the double-Jyotirlinga darshan, and Maheshwar’s ghats break the return drive. Dharamshalas and simple hotels serve the town; October to March is the season, and Shivratri and Shravan bring the great crowds with their own rewards.

The Omkareshwar temple rises above the sacred Narmada island.
