ABOUT THE PLACE

A gateway of glory

Rising beside an old tank at the edge of Vadnagar, the Kirti Toran is one of the most exquisite pieces of medieval architecture in Gujarat — a tall, free-standing triumphal archway of warm golden-red sandstone, carved in the 12th century during the Solanki era. A ‘kirti toran’ is a gateway of glory or victory, and this one — some twelve metres high, with two ornately carved columns supporting a richly sculpted arch — once stood among a set of such gateways, of which it is the finest survivor.

Every surface is worked with figures, floral bands, dancers, musicians and mythological scenes in the Maru-Gurjara style, the same idiom seen at Modhera and Rani ki Vav. Standing alone against the sky, especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset, the Kirti Toran is both the emblem of Vadnagar and a masterpiece of Gujarat’s golden age of stone-carving. (A protected monument; freely viewable.)

ARCHITECTURE & SETTING

Columns, arch and carving

The Kirti Toran is a free-standing triumphal gateway: two tall, richly carved sandstone columns supporting an ornate sculpted arch, around twelve metres high, worked in fine Maru-Gurjara detail with figures, dancers, musicians and floral bands. The finest survivor of a set of such ‘gateways of glory,’ it stands alone beside an old tank — at its most magical when the low sun turns the stone to gold. (A protected monument; freely viewable.)
