HERITAGE · DAIRY · MEHSANAThe 'ocean of milk' — Dudhsagar Dairy in Mehsana, one of Asia's largest dairies and a cornerstone of Gujarat's white revolution and the famous Gir and Mehsani milk economy.
Dudhsagar Dairy — literally ‘ocean of milk’ — is the great milk cooperative of Mehsana, one of the largest dairies in Asia and a proud symbol of Gujarat’s cooperative ‘white revolution’. Fed by the milk of hundreds of thousands of farmers across the Mehsana region — famous for its prized Mehsani buffalo and Gir cattle — the dairy processes vast quantities of milk into a huge range of products.
The cooperative underpins the rural economy and gives Mehsana its identity as a dairy capital. Part of the Amul federation’s network, it embodies the model of farmer-owned cooperatives that transformed India into the world’s largest milk producer, returning the value of every litre back to the village that produced it.
While primarily an industrial cooperative rather than a conventional tourist sight, Dudhsagar represents a remarkable success story of rural Gujarat, and its products and milk-sweets are enjoyed across the state. It is an industrial cooperative; visits are by arrangement, and an illustrated emblem is shown here in place of a photograph.
