About Gandhinagar
Gandhinagar, named for Mahatma Gandhi, is Gujarat’s serene planned capital — laid out in leafy numbered sectors along the Sabarmati since 1970. One of India’s greenest cities, it trades the bustle of neighbouring Ahmedabad for wide avenues and calm.
Its showpiece is the magnificent Swaminarayan Akshardham — a vast carved-stone temple set among fountains and gardens. Close by stand the exquisite Adalaj Stepwell, the dinosaur fossils of Indroda Park, and Dandi Kutir, the world’s largest museum dedicated to Gandhi and salt.
Add the grand Mahatma Mandir, riverfront gardens and Trimandir, and the capital makes a calm, cultured base for exploring central Gujarat.
Gandhinagar is unusual among Indian cities in having been designed rather than grown, laid out from 1966 on a grid of numbered sectors either side of the Sabarmati, with more tree cover per resident than almost any other Indian capital. That planning makes it easy to navigate and pleasant to move around, though it also means the attractions are spread out and a vehicle is close to essential.
The main draws sit within a short radius: Akshardham’s carved sandstone mandir and evening water show, the Indroda Nature Park with its dinosaur fossil galleries, and the Adalaj stepwell and Trimandir just outside the city on the Ahmedabad road. Ahmedabad itself is half an hour away, so many visitors base there and treat Gandhinagar as a day out. October to March is the kindest season.
