ABOUT

The temple tells its own story

Once the day’s aartis are done, the Somnath complex hosts “Jay Somnath” — a sound-and-light spectacle projected across the temple and its grounds. A resonant narration, music and shifting light walk visitors through the shrine’s extraordinary history: its ancient glory, its repeated destruction, and its rebirth as a symbol of endurance. Seen from the seaside plaza, it is a moving way to end a day at Somnath.

HISTORY & SIGNIFICANCE

A saga of destruction and rebirth

Prabhas Patan, Somnath.
Glory

Somnath was famed across the medieval world for its wealth — accounts describe a jyotirlinga shrine hung with gold and endowed by generations of rulers.

Ruin

It was sacked repeatedly from the eleventh century onwards, beginning with Mahmud of Ghazni in 1026, and each time rebuilt by whoever held the coast next.

Rebirth

The present temple was completed in 1951 after Independence, rebuilt in the Chalukya style on the original site at the initiative of Sardar Patel.

The show

The show compresses that thousand-year cycle of destruction and rebuilding into an hour, using the temple itself as the projection surface.

WHY EXPERIENCE IT

Why come

🎬

Jay Somnath

The narration follows Somnath from its legendary wealth through the sackings to the 1951 reconstruction.

🔦

Light play

Light is projected directly onto the temple's own walls and shikhara rather than onto a screen, which is what gives the show its scale.

🎼

Deep narration

A recorded narration with music carries the story; it runs in Hindi, with timings for other languages varying by season.

🌊

Seaside setting

The Arabian Sea is directly behind the temple, and the sound of the surf runs under the whole show.

📜

Real history

A thousand years of history in about an hour — the clearest single introduction to why this shrine matters.

🌙

Evening plan

It runs after the last evening aarti, which makes it the natural close to a day at Somnath.

THE CELEBRATION

How to experience it

01

Finish the darshan

Check the day's timing at the temple office. The show usually starts around 8pm but shifts with the season and can be cancelled in bad weather.

02

Catch the evening aarti

Stay for the evening aarti first — the show is timed to follow it and the two together make the evening.

03

Take your seat

Sit centrally in the seaside plaza. The projection is designed to be read from straight on and loses a lot from the sides.

04

Follow the story

Bring a light layer. The sea breeze on the plaza after dark is stronger than the daytime heat suggests.

05

Watch the walls

Note the security rules — phones and bags are restricted at the Somnath complex, so check what you can carry in before you arrive.

06

Check the timing

CULTURE & TRADITIONS

History, staged in light

Somnath’s story — of a shrine plundered for its legendary wealth and rebuilt in defiance time and again — lends itself to spectacle. The show distils that long arc into an hour, using the temple itself as the screen. It is both entertainment and a lesson in why this shore temple means so much to so many.
