Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is the only place in the wild where the Asiatic lion still roams. Once hunted to the edge of extinction, the lions were saved by the Nawab of Junagadh and later by dedicated protection, and their numbers have climbed steadily ever since. Back from the brink
By 1900 hunting had cut the Asiatic lion to a few dozen animals, all in the Gir forest.
The Nawab of Junagadh banned lion shooting on his lands — the intervention that saved the subspecies.
Gir was later set aside as sanctuary and national park, securing the last habitat.
Numbers have risen ever since, census by census, into the many hundreds.

Timing

When can I visit?
The park is open roughly mid-October to mid-June and closed through the monsoon breeding season; December to March is the most comfortable window.
How do I see the lions?
On a booked jeep safari with a forest-department guide, at dawn or late afternoon when the animals are active. Permits come from the official portal, not the gate.
