A shrine of selfless service
At the village of Bagdana in Bhavnagar district stands one of Gujarat’s most beloved pilgrimage centres — the ashram and shrine of the 20th-century saint Bajrang Das Bapa, known and greeted everywhere by his mantra ‘Bapa Sitaram’. Revered as a living embodiment of compassion and selfless service, Bapa established at Bagdana a great tradition of seva — above all the continuous annadan, the free feeding of all who come, regardless of who they are.
The ethos is the attraction. Bapa’s teaching had no doctrine to speak of beyond feeding whoever came and turning no one away, and the ashram he left runs on exactly that: kitchens working through the day, volunteers serving in rotation, and a samadhi shrine where the queue moves without ceremony. Trucks stop, families detour off the highway, and the greeting ‘Bapa Sitaram’ — traded between strangers across Gujarat as hello, goodbye and thank you — carries his name further than any building could.
Visitors travelling the Bhavnagar–Mahuva road will see the ashram’s influence long before arriving: ‘Bapa Sitaram’ painted on trucks, shopfronts and doorways the whole way down, the saint’s name doing duty as blessing, brand and password across the district.
Bagdana lies about 60 kilometres from Bhavnagar near Mahuva, on good roads; Bapa’s punyatithi and the Guru Purnima season bring the year’s largest gatherings, when the village fills and the kitchens work around the clock. Come at a mealtime — eating with everyone else is the visit’s real point — dress simply, and give what you wish to the collection boxes, which are the only ask you will encounter.
Today the ashram welcomes a constant flow of devotees who come for darshan at his samadhi shrine, to share in the langar-style meals, and to imbibe the spirit of charity and humility he embodied. Simple, warm and deeply devotional, Bagdana is less about grand architecture than a living ethos of service — one of the spiritual heartlands of modern Saurashtra.
