Bhavnagar, founded in 1724 by Bhavsinhji Gohil as a port for the Gohil Rajput kingdom, is one of Saurashtra’s most cultured cities — a well-planned old town that grew rich on maritime trade and became a noted centre of education and the arts.
Bhavnagar’s reputation for culture is earned history: the state ran one of princely India’s more progressive administrations, founded Samaldas College — where a young Gandhi briefly studied — and patronised Gujarati letters and theatre generously enough that the city still calls itself Saurashtra’s cultural capital. That inheritance shows in the Barton Library’s reading rooms, the Gandhi Smriti’s museum, and the planned old town’s civic geometry, laid out when the port was built to replace silted Surat trade.

Modern Bhavnagar adds a rougher counterpoint down the coast at Alang, the world’s largest ship-breaking yard, where ocean-going hulls are run aground and dismantled by hand — visitable only by permit and not a casual outing, but part of the district’s honest picture. Use the city as a base: Palitana’s temple mountain is an hour, Velavadar’s grasslands an hour, Sihor’s old capital twenty minutes, and the ganthiya is on every corner. October to March is the season.
Today it blends heritage and bustle: the white marble Takhteshwar temple crowns a hill above the city; the leafy Victoria Park shelters peacocks and birds; princely buildings like the Nilambag Palace, the Barton Library and the Gandhi Smriti recall its royal and freedom-struggle past; and the old bazaars hum with trade.
