ABOUT THE PLACE

A Siddi port on the salt coast

On the southern coast of Amreli district lies Jafrabad (Jafarabad), an old port town with a long and unusual history. For centuries it was an enclave of the Siddis of Janjira — a community of African origin — making it a rare outpost of that maritime power on the Saurashtra coast, with an old fort and harbour to show for it.

Today Jafrabad is a working fishing and trading port, its shoreline marked by wide salt pans where seawater is evaporated into glittering white salt, by fishing boats, and by the nearby deep-water Pipavav port. Just offshore lies the island of Shiyal Bet, a fishing community reached by boat.

More workaday than scenic, Jafrabad offers an authentic taste of the Saurashtra coast — its salt flats, sea breezes and layered history a world away from the inland temple towns.

ARCHITECTURE & SETTING

Fort, harbour and salt flats

Jafrabad’s character is coastal and functional: an old fort and harbour from its Siddi past, a working fishing port, and a shoreline given over to extensive salt pans where seawater is channelled and evaporated into white salt.

Nearby rises the modern deep-water Pipavav port, while offshore lies Shiyal Bet island. There is no grand monument here — the appeal is the layered history, the salt-and-sea landscape and the rhythm of a working coast.
