TEMPLE · SHIVAAn ancient Shiva temple at the foot of Girnar — site of the great Bhavnath Mahashivratri Mela, when Naga sadhus and pilgrims throng its sacred fair.
At the foot of Girnar, where the great pilgrim climb begins, stands the ancient Bhavnath Mahadev temple, dedicated to Shiva. An age-old shrine wrapped in legend, it is most famous for the Bhavnath Mahashivratri Mela — a vibrant five-day fair held each year around Mahashivratri.
During the mela, the foothills fill with hundreds of thousands of devotees and, most strikingly, the Naga sadhus (ascetic warriors) who descend from their retreats to bathe in the sacred Mrugi Kund and process to the temple. The air fills with bhajans, the smoke of dhunis (sacred fires) and the swirl of one of Gujarat’s most atmospheric religious gatherings.
Outside the fair, the temple is a serene starting point for the Girnar ascent, set against the mountain’s soaring backdrop — a place where pilgrimage, legend and the mountain meet.

Bhavnath Mahadev is a traditional Shiva temple set at Girnar Taleti, the foot of the mountain, built around the lingam in its sanctum and surrounded by subsidiary shrines, the sacred Mrugi Kund and the broad open grounds that host the mela.
Unassuming for most of the year, the complex transforms during the Bhavnath fair into a vast ritual stage — akhara camps, dhuni fires and processions filling the foothills — its true architecture being as much the gathering as the building.
