Shoolpaneshwar is an old Shiva shrine of the Narmada valley, revered enough that the surrounding wildlife sanctuary — over 600 square kilometres of forested hill country — carries its name.
The original temple stood in the river gorge and was a fixed halt on the Narmada Parikrama, the months-long circumambulation of the river that pilgrims still walk on foot.
Construction of the Sardar Sarovar Dam raised the reservoir over the old site, one of many places along this stretch of the Narmada submerged by the project.
The deity was reinstalled at a relocated temple above the water line, and worship and the parikrama halt continued there.
