HERITAGE · SWAMINARAYAN TIRTHThe sacred town of Gadhpur — where Lord Swaminarayan lived for years and where the Akshar Deri marks his memory, one of the holiest places of the Swaminarayan faith.
On the banks of the Ghela river in Botad district lies Gadhada — known to devotees as Gadhpur — one of the holiest towns of the Swaminarayan tradition. It was here, in the early 19th century, that Bhagwan Swaminarayan spent a great part of his life, delivered many of the discourses recorded in the Vachanamrut, and was finally cremated; the spot is marked by the revered Akshar Deri, a memorial shrine of profound importance to followers.
Gadhada today is a major tirth, with the historic Gopinathji temple built by Swaminarayan himself and a grand modern BAPS mandir complex drawing pilgrims from across the world. The town’s lanes, ghats and shrines are steeped in the memory of the faith’s founder, and the air is one of devotion, order and seva.
For the Swaminarayan community and curious travellers alike, Gadhada is a serene and deeply significant place — a living heart of one of Gujarat’s great religious movements.

Gadhada’s heritage is the Swaminarayan faith made tangible: the historic Gopinathji temple built by Swaminarayan himself, the revered Akshar Deri memorial, the grand modern BAPS mandir complex, and the ghats and shrines along the Ghela river that frame the town.
Its atmosphere — devotional, orderly and steeped in the founder’s memory — makes Gadhada far more than a monument: it is a living, working tirth at the heart of the movement.
